At this moment, I find myself working mostly on paintings centering on various aspects of family life, childhood, and coming of age. There is an intrinsic beauty in the activities of children, as they go about the business of creating their lives, blithe to the noisy triviality of a good deal of adult life.
Not that children are independent of the adults around them. Having a 10 year old in the house certainly provides one with a different perspective on life! As an adult, it is almost too easy to keep a distance from living, to put a barrier between the world we can control, and the natural chaos outside the window.

But having a child in the house also reminds one of the struggle of growing up. Gaugin created a painting in which he posed a question - rather a series of questions: "Where do we come from? Who are we? Where are we going?"

And Virginia Postrel, a popular libertarian writer, answers in part with her comment : "There is no single future."

What will today's ten year old face in his future?
Certainly the difficulty of adolesence - but then what?
The future is, to say the least, unsettled.
